What are Merchant Initiated Transactions?

Merchant Initiated Transactions are a whole class of Transactions dealing with cases where where the cardholder is not available for Authentication.

Merchant Initiated Transactions (MIT) are transactions which are started by the Merchant rather than the cardholder as would happen when the cardholder clicks to make a payment.

Recurring and Installment transactions are the most common type of Merchant Initiated Transactions.

Decoupled Authentication introduced in Version 2.2 are a new type of Merchant Initiated Transactions which is expected to become very popular.

Outside recurring transactions, the Travel industry encounters many MIT scenarios; when the cardholder incurs additional charges which are not part of the original booking, Merchant Initiated Transactions arise.

Merchant Initiated Transactions (MIT) are also referred to as 3DS Requestor Initiated (3RI) or Server Initiated Requests (SRI).
